The TWO Ingredients you need to introduce into your Morning

February 24, 2016

Say hello to your new morning friends….Chia & Lemons!

I wake up dehydrated each morning. It doesn’t matter what environment; Melbourne, Darwin or an over-airconditioned hotel room.

While my appetite takes a while to jumpstart, I like to start each day with the following:

  • 500ml Coconut Water (or just filtered water)
  • 1 Lemon (remove skin and pith)
  • 3 Tablespoons Chia

Coconut water, to me, is overrated. It’s marketed as having the hydrating impact of swallowing an ocean. However, most $4 coconut bottles have the potassium of a potato. Despite the criticisms, I use it for several reasons. Firstly, I get it for about $1.20/can at the Yahweh Asian grocery in Highpoint Shopping Centre (Melbourne). Secondly, it sweetens up the beverage guilt free and I’ll take the embellished potassium hit as it does help with quenching the thirst.

I’ve spent most of my life despising lemon but a little education had me quickly overcome the tart flavour. Now I preach the immune boosting and antibacterial properties. The vitamin c, citric acid and bioflavonoids fight any infection and help restore your body’s pH level. Not only that but they detoxify the liver and also provide great digestive help. The lemon, in my view, is as potent as any superfood grown anywhere in the world. If your neighbour has an overhanging tree or your grandma planted one forty years ago, make sure you take advantage.

Chia is similarly multi-functional and is another superfood that Australians are now pretty familiar with. Chia, in terms of nutritional content, is basically a blend of the best attributes in salmon, spinach, blueberries and human growth hormone. If you haven’t read the worldwide bestseller, “Born To Run”, do yourself a favour. Christopher McDougall describes the true story of the Tarahumara tribe who live hidden in the Copper Canyons of Mexico, running double marathons for fun all on the fuel of the magical chia seed.

These simple ingredients blended together do so much to alkalise and hydrate my cells. The perfect precursor to breakfast.

What’s your morning routine? Are you also a lemon lover?
