Simple workplace wellness resolutions for your most successful year yet

January 9, 2019

Resolutions are a great way to stay focused on what you really want, but often we try to make too many changes all at once, and end up giving up on most, if not all, of them by the time February rolls around. Sound familiar? The solution is integrating simple wellbeing goals into your work day, and building on them with more complex commitments, once the easy ones become routine.

It’s the small, simple changes over time that make all the difference, so integrating some of the following easy changes into your routine will bring health and wellness into your workplace with ease.

Take Your Meetings Outside

You’ve heard that “sitting is the new smoking” so make the most of your meetings to move and get recommended 30 minutes of daily exercise. If it’s a phone meeting, grab your headphones and go for a walk around the office. If you have an informal face-to-face meeting, grab your colleague and head outside. Not only will you get fresh air but you’ll also get your daily dose of vitamin D, which will refresh and recharge you, and keep you feeling good for the rest of the day.

Snack smarter to feel & work better

When the mid-afternoon munchies kick in, cookies, muffins, and chocolate are quick, easy fixes for even the strongest and most disciplined person. But, as is the case here, quick and easy isn’t always a good thing. Be prepared for the 3 pm crash by planning ahead and keeping your desk drawer or office kitchen cupboard stocked with nourishing protein-packed goodies and free of sugary snacks. Protein-rich, healthy snacks will not only keep you feeling satisfied until dinner, they’ll boost your energy and mood and stabilise blood sugar levels, preventing that good old hangry feeling. Plus, if you add these items to your weekly grocery shop, you might end up saving money, too. Talk about a win-win.

Drink Water
Dehydration leads to exhaustion & tiredness, food cravings, and foggy memory. Drinking around 2 liters of water every day will help keep you alert and focused, and will help with your memory and cognitive function. The best way to do this is to use a large water bottle (stainless steel or glass are your best choices) and make sure you’re regularly refilling it to get your required water intake. An easy way to remember this is to set an alarm for every couple of hours. If you haven’t finished your water by the time the alarm goes off, it will remind you to drink up! If you find it hard to drink plain water, try adding pieces of fruit, such as citrus or berries to your water for a healthy burst of flavour, and eat foods with high water content, such as cucumbers, oranges and kiwi fruit.

Keep your space clean and organised

Cleanliness is important in the workplace for many reasons. Dust and bacteria, chemical or biological contaminants, inadequate ventilation and electromagnetic radiation can all have a negative impact on your health, all of which may be present if you work in a particularly enclosed space. As well as keeping things well organised and clutter-free, try adding plants to your desk or office. Indoor plants are both visually appealing and filter the air, minimising your exposure to molds and other toxins. An added bonus is that a happy, lively, clean space will create an atmosphere of order, which will help you get things done.
