Meet the gorgeous, incredibly lovely and hard-working Tully Lou– active wear designer, yoga teacher, health and wellness writer. We are so thrilled to welcome her to our community ofLife Enthusiasts and for allowing us to take a peep inside her exciting budding world.
Can you tell us a little about you?
I am just a normal, active, fun-loving and hard working chick. I grew up in a country town an hour out of Melbourne and always loved fashion and expressing myself through my outfits. After overcoming an eating disorder and depression in my teens I decided to dedicate my work and worth to elevating others to achieve better health through eating well and staying active! I created my baby TULLY LOU an active wear label to help inspire woman to look good and feel good whilst working out. I have to pinch myself everyday when I see woman around the world in my gear. I am also Yoga teacher. I have been teaching since I was 22. I do it part time and am in love with teaching, it’s so rewarding. It’s always awesome to give back to others. I am so grateful that I found yoga at such a young age; it’s helped me keep on top of things.
And your journey to wellness? What led you to Yoga and eventually to teaching?
I was in recovery for anorexia around the age of 16yrs old. In the beginning, I started to do yoga for more of the physical aspect of it + didn’t really understand the concept of YOGA. It was probably a few months into practicing when I saw a huge shift in my recovery and myself. I could finally look at myself in the eye, I was finding less negative mind chatter and finding love again for myself and people around me. It was then when I realized I wanted to continue my passion of yoga and also designs so I started TULLY LOU + went off to yoga teacher training. I wanted to help people and inspire students they way it changed my life.
Have you always been conscious of your own health and wellbeing? If no, when did the change happen?
Yes and no, you could say! I was always active as a child, playing all types of sports. We lived on property so I was lucky enough to be able to run around in our paddocks and climb trees! As I mentioned earlier, there was a time in my life were I didn’t so much have a passion for active living + my health, however it was more of an obsession, which isn’t healthy. It all changed once I started doing Yoga and really just accepting myself and using food to heal my body!
What does a typical day in the life of Tully Lou look like?
A typical/ideal day for me would involve YOGA/Physical Activity of some sort. At the moment I am loving Yoga, Boxing, Pilates + spin. Working with my amazing TULLY LOU team on some exciting adventures. Delicious healthy foods + smoothies. Meditation and heaps of love!
When students leave you class or wear your clothes, what do you want them to feel?
I want them to feel loved + inspired to live the best and healthiest life possible!
We’ve found there is a huge focus on the physical, that most of us want to look fit and healthy, and yet we seem to have neglected the health of our mind. There is an enormous increase in mental illness particularly amongst young people. What do you believe is happening? Is it social media? Is it societies expectations? What are your thoughts regarding mental illness?
I think many people do use social media sites to make comparisons with others, which can lead to negative emotions. I see a lot of people comparing their achievements against their friends on sites like Facebook etc. and this is disappointing.
My thoughts on mental illness for young people would be to incorporate more health and wellness into schools. With daily meditation even for 10 mins, a few yoga classes a week, sports etc. Activities where they can really express themselves through art, dance, writing, music and acting. By adding all these awesome activities into their lives so young it will help with setting them up for adulthood and with these tools they can use them all throughout their lives to maintain happy wellness!
When do you feel most balanced?
When I Listen to my body and myself + work out what it really needs on that day as apposed to what I “think” it needs. Also after yoga class connecting with my breath and getting present is so important to live a balanced life.
What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?
To always love yourself no matter what and follow your heart.
Who has been an significant influence in your life?
My family – They have been my rocks + seriously don’t know where I would be today without their love and support
What do you believe is the most important change people should make if they want to be kinder to themselves?
Stop comparing ourselves with others….This is something that I know we are all guilty of even myself! Especially with the explosion of social media these days. Instead we should be putting all our energy and attention to our own goals and what is required to achieve them.
What are the most meaningful things you’ve experienced so far?
That food is fuel. Using fresh healthy foods to help heal your body. I spent a long time depriving and obsessing over food now I love to feed my body with nutrients.
