We all have them, those troublesome behaviours that pop up during a moment of weakness, stress or a hard situation. A habit- good or bad is a behaviour that is repeated often enough in our life that over time you don’t really think about what you’re doing as you’re doing it. Eventually, something in your life either environmental or a situation will trigger the ‘habit’ as an automatic response.
With a little determination, anyone can break the bad habits they don’t want to keep…
How To Start New Habits…
1. Set goals and visualise success – Start thinking about the BIG picture. Write down your main goal and stick it somewhere in your house, car or at work so you are constantly reminded of your goal.
2. Make a list of all the habits you want to change – To change your bad habits, you have to know what they are.
3. Remove the triggers – Make a list of your obstacles that way you know exactly when the bad habit will surface.
- When does your bad habit actually happen?
- How many times do you do it each day?
- Where are you?
- Who are you with?
4. Start Small – Begin with small changes that mean something to you and will encourage you to keep going!
5. Reward your new good habits – We’re all human and we love praise. One way to break that bad habit is to reward ourselves. (In a healthy way!)
6. Write down your progress – This is a great way to keep track of how far you’ve come and how much you’ve accomplished, which can sometimes be difficult for us to remember.
Of course be kind to yourself, change takes time and patience…We all fall sometimes and that’s ok. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you to get back on track!
